Born in Canada in 2009, Chase Chong is a warm-hearted and multi-talented high school student with a passion for music, academics, and community service. He first discovered his love for the piano in Hong Kong, where he was captivated by the instrument’s ability to create beautiful sounds across diverse musical genres. Upon returning to Canada at the age of seven, he began formal piano studies with Ms. Mia Bie under the Royal Conservatory of Music. He later advanced his training under England’s London examination board and earned a Diploma in Pianoforte Performance from the University of West London, under the guidance of Dr. Jocelyn Lai.
Chase has performed regularly in community events, charity recitals, and competitions since his first public recital at the Roy Barnett Recital Hall at UBC at age nine. Most recently, he was awarded the Gold Award in Division IV (age 14–18) at the 2025 Steinway Competition Canada. A dedicated volunteer, Chase has used music to give back to the community, performing in charity concerts to support children and medical organizations such as Vancouver General Hospital, Lions Gate Hospital, and the UBC Medical Research Foundation since 2019.
An intellectually curious and open-minded student, Chase is currently enrolled in the academically rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, drawn to its emphasis on holistic development and community involvement. He is also the 2024 Gold Medalist of the TKEthics Global Olympiad, where he debated contemporary moral issues in AI technology through philosophical reasoning.
Outside the classroom and recital hall, Chase is a competitive swimmer who competes on behalf of his high school, qualified for the Lower Mainland Regional (LMR) before age nine and has consistently placed at top levels in both Canadian and U.S. swim meets. He has earned his National Lifeguard certification and is now pursuing Lifesaving Instructor certification to share vital safety skills with others.
A second-level (2nd ‘dan’) black belt Taekwondo instructor, Chase also serves as a Flight Corporal in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. He dedicates time to mentoring younger students, peer teaching, and participating in City of Vancouver programs such as Adopt-a-Block, Yellow Fish, and Adopt-a-Sewer, which he named it “Legato,” after the Italian musical term meaning “smoothly connected.”
Whether through music, academics, athletics, or service, Chase is committed to growing as a student, musician, leader, and global citizen.
